Can You Hear it Calling?
So i have wanted to post about this for a little while- 50 new Popular Penguin books have been released! I am so excited about this not only because this series is super cheap ($10 each!) but also because there are a lot of Australian titles. I took a trip to Borders the other day and picked up three books- The Getting of Wisdom by Henry Handel Richardson, The Plague by Albert Camus and Summer Crossing by Truman Capote. I had to really resist buying Picnic at Hanging Rock but as i can only read one at a time anyway i will pick that one up soon.
The Getting of Wisdom is set in a turn of the century boarding school and how one girl compromises her ideals in search for popularity and acceptance- sounds a little like Gossip Girl. It's always interesting hearing about what boarding schools in Australia were like in the past, having spent a few years at one myself (the author went to PLC Melbourne).
Truman Capote is one of my all time favorite authors! I LOVED In Cold Blood, although at times it was a little disturbing. I have been meaning to read Breakfast at Tiffany’s for a while and when i saw Summer Crossing (about a rich young girl in New York) I knew I had to have it.
Finally, Albert Camus is AMAZING. If you haven't read The Stranger go and buy a copy immediately. It is a thin little book but you need quite a few weeks to read it as it is a bizarre and twisted existentialist story of how one man murders a complete stranger (in the same vein as Crime and Punishment). From all reports The Plague is dark and delves into those things that we have no control over.
I can’t wait to have all fifty of my cute little orange Popular Penguins all lined up in my bookcase although it will take me a while to acquire and read all of them! I am going to start with Summer Crossing and will keep you posted on my new acquisitions. If you haven’t seen all of the new titles head to http://www.popularpenguins.com.au/.

Too Much of a Good Thing

So i finally relented and hired out the whole first season of Gossip Girl last week. I knew i shouldnt have as soon as i handed over my money at the video store- i have become so addicted! Owing to this i went a bit bananas with the headbands on the weekend. Makes me want to migrate to New York and hang with Dree Hemingway, Tinsley Mortimer, Lydia/ Amanda Hearst, Byrdie Bell and all the other NY socialites. What a hard life! Prehaps thats my new career idea! I can't wait to watch the second season!
